The walk from The Jackson Street Building to my apartment above Cozy Bar was a short but loud one. Though this site would be considered a "walkable" one, there are some other factors that contribute to the voyager's overall experience. The sidewalks were large enough to fit two people comfortably for most of the journey. Since we walked near campus, that portion of our walk was quite enjoyable. It was shaded, calm, and physically appealing. However, when you cross that threshold into what is the downtown area of Athens, the noise becomes extremely loud. Broad, one of the busiest streets downtown, is the first large road we had to cross. Without the pedestrian crossing signs, it would be complete chaos. Even though the intersection is busy and chaotic, pedestrians feel fairly safe because of the signage. Our last trek up the hill to my apartment was not pleasant. After a night of quintessential college "fun", the bar-ridden downtown streets smelled of stale alcohol and what the freshman call "bar-tar" (a concoction of various liquors and beers). It was not pleasant in the slightest.
